"Hell could find no worse..."

On this day in 1915 the 2nd Battle of Ypres began.  It saw the Germans use gas for the first time.  One soldier recalling the gas attacks at Ypres described the horror of finding his gassed comrades - the words in the title are his. The Dorset Regiment reacted with a new motto "No Prisoners".

  1. I can't even imagine the horror they experienced. My grandfather was a veteran of World War I and I have photographs of him wearing his gas mask. It makes me shudder to think of it.

  2. My grandfather was gassed too - he was in the Royal Field Artillery. He survived the war but my mother always felt that he died earlier than he would have done if he had not been gassed.

  3. My G-Uncle was gassed also. It was written up in the small local paper. People were horified.
War, although sometimes a neccessary evil, is sad.
